Common Myths About EMDR Therapy — Embodied Being

Common Myths About EMDR Therapy

9th July 2026 • EMDR
EMDR Explained

Why EMDR Is Often Misunderstood

EMDR can sound unusual when it is reduced to “moving your eyes while thinking about a memory”. In reality, it is a structured therapy with preparation, assessment, processing and review.

Understanding what EMDR does—and does not do—can make it easier to decide whether you would like to discuss it with a qualified practitioner.

Good EMDR practice is structured, collaborative and paced around the individual.

Myth One

“EMDR Erases Memories”

EMDR does not remove a memory. The goal is to reduce the distress attached to it and support more adaptive understanding.

You may still remember what happened, but the memory may feel more clearly located in the past rather than continuing to dominate the present.

Myth Two

“You Must Describe Every Detail”

EMDR does not necessarily require a detailed verbal account. You need to identify enough information to work with the target memory, but the process can often proceed without recounting every aspect aloud.

This can make EMDR appealing to people who find repeated detailed retelling difficult. However, communication with the therapist remains important so the work can be paced safely.

Myth Three

“EMDR Is Hypnosis”

EMDR is not hypnosis. You remain awake, aware and able to stop. The practitioner does not control your thoughts or implant memories.

You are asked to notice what arises while remaining connected to the present and to the therapeutic process.

Myth Four

“It Works in One Session for Everyone”

Some people notice meaningful change quickly, but there is no universal timeline. The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the experiences being addressed, current stability and treatment goals.

Preparation may take time, and responsible therapy does not rush into processing simply because EMDR has a reputation for being efficient.
